COPENHAGEN WINS GOLD AWARD
Jul. 7, 2010 | Topic: CleantechFor two weeks in December 2009, Copenhagen hosted the world's first certified sustainable international summit of its kind - COP15. Now, Copenhagen has been honoured with international recognition - the prestigious 'Green Meetings Gold Award 2010'.
For more than two years prior to COP15, the Ministry of foreign affairs, the Municipality of Copenhagen and the Bella Center invested enormous amounts of time, energy and money in the project to ensure that the Copenhagen Summit was held in the most sustainable way. And recently these efforts were honored with the coveted IMEX Green Meetings ‘Gold’ Award ', also known as the industry's equivalent to an Oscar.
The award is an international recognition of the high standards for the environment and sustainability, which was upheld during COP15, which not only were measured and documented, but which also have been converted into a set of guidelines for the international conference industry, namely the White Paper “Copenhagen Sustainable Meetings protocol”.
The fact that COP15 was held with such high demands on sustainability has acted as a catalyst for the Copenhagen meeting industry, which has chosen to work with sustainability much more seriously and in many more areas than ever before. Among other things, today 53% of the city's hotel rooms are certified in a green classification compared to only 12 % at the end of 2008.
