DANISH COMPANY TO BUILD NEW SWEDISH PALACE

May 17, 2010 | Topic: Property and Construction

SchmidtHammerLassen Architects has just won the project, culture and congress palace Kontrapunkt in Malmø. The spectacular Danish project is to ensure that Malmö will not be reduced to a mere satellite to the Copenhagen Metropolis.

SHL Architects won the project in competition with giants such as the architects behind the Oslo opera Snöhetta and world architect Daniel Libeskind, who is behind the construction of the new World Trade Center in New York.

It is the second time within a short time, that the Danish architects overtake some of the world's most sought-after architects. SHL Architects won the competition to do the International Criminal Court in The Hague earlier this year. An architectural triumph that gave global resonance, pleasure.dk writes.

Front runner
It is a well received development, especially in light of the economic crisis which has greatly reduced the number of construction projects at home. At the same time, we can enjoy the fact that the serene and very Scandinavian style which SHL Architects represents is extremely popular around the world, crisis or not, pleasure.dk writes.

Kontrapunkt in Malmø is, just as many other SHL Arhchitects’ projects, urbanism translated into Scandinavian. Settled, subdued and, despite its colossal size - the palace is 54,000 sqm - carefully tailored to the local spirit.

The buildings, which will also include 35,000 sqm housing, located in Neptuniparken at the University of Holmen in Malmø near the city's ancient core.
