A MYTH THAT DANISH PROSPERITY IS FADING
Mar. 9, 2010 | Topic: EconomyIt is very likely a mistake, when it is alleged that Denmark lags behind in prosperity and productivity. An analysis by two researchers from the University of Copenhagen shows otherwise.
Denmark does not lag behind in prosperity and wealth, as is often claimed. Nor does there appear to be a systematic decline in productivity, which has also been an on-going claim.
Now, two researchers at Copenhagen University, Professor Carl-Johan Dalgaard from the Department of Economics and Professor Henrik Hansen from the Food Economics Institute, have examined the allegations of Denmark's declining prosperity in a study of Danish growth and productivity, going all the way back to 1950.
“The conclusion is that there is no tendency for declining growth. There are countries that are poorer than Denmark, which have grown more than us, and which are catching up with our level of prosperity and wealth. But it is an entirely natural process called convergence, where poor countries catch up with the wealthier nations.
We are not lagging behind
When looking at both the gross domestic product (GDP) per capita and GDP per person employed, Denmark seems to have upheld the same level of growth of approximately two percent per year since 1950. Nor does there appear to have been a systematic decline since 1995, such as in particular the OECD identified in an analysis of Denmark in 2009.
