A municipality with history
The town centre of Hillerød is dominated by beautiful Frederiksborg Castle, built by King Christian IV in the first half of the 17th century. The castle is surrounded by the castle lake and the reconstructed baroque garden. In days of old the castle served as a hunting retreat for royalty, who could enjoy its scenic location set amid the forests of northern Zealand. Today one-third of the municipality's area is covered by forest.
