World-class academic research in neuroscience
The region conducts a wide variety of neuroscience research:
Body and Mind is one of Copenhagen University's new research priority areas. The project will include research into different areas such as basic and clinical neurobiology, psychiatry and cognitive psychology.
The Wallenberg Neuroscience Centre at Lund University is a research centre with focus on neurodegenerative diseases, neuroprotection and cell signalling in the central nervous system.
- Neuroprotective research (e.g. Lund University)
- Translational medicine (e.g. Lund University)
- Stem cell neuroscience research (e.g. Wallenberg Neurocenter, Lund University)
- Clinical applied tissue repair (e.g. Wallenberg Neurocenter, Lund University)
- New drug design in neuroscience (e.g. Copenhagen University, Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences)
CNS focused pharmaceutical companies
The vast majority of R&D originates from H. Lundbeck, a pharmaceutical company specialising in CNS with approximately 5,200 employees in Medicon Valley, and in addition H. Lundbeck uses about 21 per cent of the annual revenue on R&D. H. Lundbeck is among the world's leading companies within the area of antidepressants, and it's Cipramil and Cipralex drugs are among the best selling drugs in this area. H. Lundbeck is engaged in close collaboration with neuroscience researchers and study programmes at Lund University. In addition, H. Lundbeck funds research projects and represents an important source of highly educated neuroscience research staff that companies locating in the region can benefit from directly and indirectly.
Several other companies contribute to the corporate side of Medicon Valley's R&D within neuroscience, including Enkam, NeuroSearch, QuickCool, NeuroPharma, NsGene and Pharmexa.
Medicon Valley's position within neuroscience research is attractive to investors and companies in three main areas: tissue repair, translational medicine and research with a clinical perspective.
