Scientist at Lund University Wins Nordic Fernström Prize
The Eric K. Fernström Foundation has announced Felix Mitelman the winner of the Foundation's Nordic Prize. Mitelman receives first prize EUR 110000.
Felix Mitelman is Professor of clinical genetics at Lund University. Mitelman's work is focused on chromosomal changes in cancer. He researches into how external factors can influence a normal cell and the transformation into a cancerous cell via chromosomal alterations during the cell division. His research group has up till today described more than 100 chromosomal changes in different types of cancer.
He has published several hundred articles, as well as created a database on cancer cell chromosomal changes. Felix Mitelman was among the first to claim that solid tumors, and not only blood cancer as was widely accepted, could be caused by fusion genes.
