ProstaLund; Treatment with Microwaves still Going Strong after 5 Years
ProstaLund AB's method of microwave treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia is still preferable to surgery, even after five years. The treatment method has proven to be as effective as traditional surgery, but with less risk involved. The five-year follow-up of the FDA-controlled clinical study will be presented at a user meeting for urologists outside Stockholm at the end of this week.
The study included a total of 154 patients from ten clinics in Scandinavia and the US. The patients were divided between traditional surgery and microwave treatment with PLFT, ProstaLund Feedback Treatment. Researchers have studied symptomatic improvement in patients, classifying the changes according to an internationally accepted symptom scale. The patients in the two groups were classified as having "severe symptoms" before treatment, and after treatment both groups were classified under "mild symptoms". Researchers could not find any significant statistical difference between the treatment groups.
Over half of all men over the age of fifty experience problems in connection with urination and about 25% will need treatment for their problems. The treatment with microwaves is administered through a catheter under local anesthesia. The prostate is heated to the point that tissue dies, making it easier for the urine to pass.
ProstaLund AB is active in the field of medical devices. The company develops and sells equipment for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia, based on a unique customized microwave treatment that takes place while monitoring the temperature of the prostate. The company's operations are carried out in close collaboration with leading universities and hospitals in Sweden and around the world. About 15,000 patients have been treated with ProstaLund's equipment to date.
