ScanBalt

ScanBalt is a network of networks within the meta-region that encompasses Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Poland, Sweden, northern Germany and north-western Russia. This meta-region is named ScanBalt BioRegion.

ScanBalt is a membership-based non-profit association set up to promote the development of ScanBalt BioRegion as a globally competitive bioregion.

The objectives of ScanBalt are to:

  • Establish a corporate identity for ScanBalt BioRegion
  • Develop visibility for ScanBalt BioRegion and the members of ScanBalt
  • Attract human, industrial and financial resources
  • Coordinate joint efforts in research, education, technology transfer and economic development
  • Provide a platform to facilitate dialogue and collaboration between networks, academia, hospitals, public authorities, private companies and individuals
  • Establish a platform to facilitate dialogue with supra-national institutions
  • Establish benefits and offers for members

Medicon Valley Academy, BioCon Valley (Germany) and BioTurku (Finland) launched the ScanBalt project in 2001. After three years as a project funded by the Nordic Innovation Centre, ScanBalt became an independent non-profit membership-based association in 2004.

The ScanBalt BioRegion encompasses 11 countries, 85 million people and more than 60 universities and 870 biotech/life science companies.
