Clinical Research in Medicon Valley
Extensive experience
Medicon Valley has a long tradition of conducting clinical trials on a large scale. Through the years a unique set-up for clinical trials has been developed, capitalising on the close collaboration between universities, hospitals and the life science industry.
This experience ensures that clinical trials are run smoothly, and accordingly Medicon Valley is renowned for high-quality and cost-efficient clinical trials.
Comprehensive patient databases
Another reason why Medicon Valley is a highly competitive location for clinical trials is the comprehensive patient databases that exist in both Denmark and Sweden. These databases include all segments of the population thanks to the free health care offered to all residents. Furthermore, all residents have a social security number and historical health data is stored centrally, allowing for accurate and in-depth profiling of every patient.
Finally, not only is high-quality data available, but also there is great willingness on the part of the population to participate in clinical trials. This is due to a high level of trust in safe trial management and in the health care system in general.
Smooth approval processing and large capacity
Obtaining approval for clinical trials can be a cumbersome process. In Medicon Valley, however, approvals can be granted within a few weeks, and applications to the national medical agency and the council of ethics can be filed simultaneously. This contrasts with e.g. Germany, where parallel submissions are not possible and the United Kingdom, where ethical council approval can take from 2-45 months, according to a Boston Consulting Group study.
When granted the approval, 32 hospitals, 15 clinical research organisations (CROs) and 13 contract manufacturing organisations (CMOs) ensures sufficient capacity to perform even large-scale clinical trials.
